The BASA President's Cup 2011 is from the 25th - 26th November 2011. The Inter-Club competition will be held at the National Swimming Pool, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Sports Complex, Jalan Berakas.

Brunei Swimming Club has a team to compete in the Championships. All events are listed in The Session List.

Flashback: BSC Inter-Club 2007

The first BSC Inter-Club swimming competition was held on 1st and 2nd September 2007 at the Aquatic Centre, Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas. The tournament, sponsored by TM Asia Insurance and Hua Ho Department Store, saw a total of 231 swimmers taking part from seven teams, namely Brunei Swimming Club (BSC), Dolphins Swimming Club (DSC), Mabohai Sea-Lion Swimming Team (MSST), MCA Swimming Team (MST), Panaga Stingray (RAY), Royal Brunei Recreation Club (RBRC) and Skim Renang Brunei (SKIM).

SKIM finished strong as the overall winners clinching 51 gold, 31 silver and 25 bronze medals. The Royal Brunei Recreation Club (RBRC) came in second with 16 gold, nine silver and 18 bronze medals, while BSC finished third with nine gold, 18 silver and 10 bronze medals.

The Best Boy Swimmer Award for Group 5 to Open age group categories went to Jasper Lau (BSC), Frank Wong (RBRC), Jose Manuel (RAY), Md Bahrinshah Behromshem (SKIM), Siu Kent Chung (SKIM) and Asreel Ahmad (SKIM) respectively. Meanwhile, all five of the Best Girl Swimmer Award went to the SKIM girls — Jocelyn Wong, Nurhana Yossli, Amanda Liew, Maria Grace Koh and Amnahliyani Husain.

BSC Inter-Club Swimming 2009

This year, the main sponsors for the event are Tokio Marine Insurance, Carsmart and Aewon. With around 200 swimmers from seven teams, including one from Miri, the two-day event kicked off on Saturday, 21 November, at The National Swimming Pool in Berakas at 2.30pm.

The teams competing for the BSC Inter-Club Champions title comprised of Skim Renang Brunei (SRB), Royal Brunei Recreation Club (RBRC), Jerudong International School (JIS), Dolphin Swimming Club (DSC), Micia Swimming Team (MST), Brunei Swimming Club (BSC), and Gymkhana Club Miri (GCM) from across the border.

The competition saw outstanding performances from many of the swimmers. New Inter-Club records in 45 individual events and 4 relay events were set during these championships. A total of 95 athletes were involved in smashing the previous Inter-Club records set in 2007.

The best boy title in Group 1 (15-17) went to Look Mun Jun, who clinched four gold medals, while the best girl award went to Maria Grace Koh, who grabbed seven gold medals.

The Group 2 (13-14) age group category saw Anderson Lim Chee Wei, with three gold and three silver medals, and Amanda Liew Xia Xin, with seven gold medals, take the honour for best boy and best girl respectively.

In Group 3 (11-12), the best swimmer awards went to Christian Nikles who grabbed six gold medals and Florence Sea Wern Lyn with five gold, one silver and one bronze medal.

The best boy In Group 4 (9-10) was Muhd Bakri Yossli who took four gold and two bronze medals while the best girl was Jocelyn Wong Tshin Tze with six gold and one silver.

In Group 5 (8 & below), the best boy and girl swimmers respectively were Luther Lee with two gold and three silvers medals and Alissa Yong Zhi Sang with three gold.

BSC Inter-Club Swimming Championships

The BSC Inter-Club Swimming Championships was organised to promote the sport in the country and also to build good friendship between the clubs, whilst giving all swimmers, young and old, the opportunity to display their potential for representing the country in the future.

Open to any clubs in Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei, swimmers will compete over two days in 50M and 100M individual events and the 4 x 50M team relay event. The events are categorised into six age groups - Open (18 & over), Group 1 (15-17), Group 2 (13-14), Group 3 (11-12), Group 4 (9-10) and Group 5 (8 & below).

As an annual event, we have incorporated the open age group into the championship, with the aims of promoting and encouraging swimming among the youths as well as those from the private and government working sectors.

Our BAG experience

The Brunei Age Group (BAG) 2009 was a blast and an excellent experience for our club swimmers. We had a total of twenty swimmers participating in the competition, including Daryl, Boon Chu and Ching Yee in the Open category.

Our Group 4 Boys (age 9-10) were Sean, Darren, Nazrin, Nathan and Akmal

In Group 5 (age 8&U), our boys were Aiman and James…

…and Jake and Shawn.

The girls representing BSC were Jia Yi, Dania and Ayesha in Group 5; Natalie in Group 4; Emily and Ting in Group 3; and Elaine and Jordine in Group 1.

For some it was their first time in a 50 meter pool, and at first sight it can be overwhelming. In preparation, we did manage to squeeze in a couple of training sessions at the venue before the competition day.

We also made some wardrobe changes and equipped them with their very own BSC swimcap to minimize water resistance and drag.

Tough competition in the Girls Group 1 category for Jordine and Elaine.

BSC’s most serious (when it’s race time, it’s concentration all the way)

…and his miniature (aka “the professional”). As of today, Aiman has improved a lot, especially his dives.

We managed to come away with a couple of medals in the Girls Group 1 and Open category. But what was more important is that our swimmers all improved their times, their technique, dives, and endurance. Surprisingly, some of our swimmers can suddenly swim butterfly.

The Challenge

It is always important to note that, at this developmental stage of their swimming, every swimmer has their own undesirable habits like turning over onto their front during the backstroke finish, touching the wall with one hand and flutter kicks during the breaststroke, etc. These habits ultimately lead to the dreaded disqualification (DQ).

As incentive, we promised that if every swimmer avoids being DQ'ed for all their events and improved on their best times, we would treat them to a day out at the movies, inclusive of popcorn. There were some close calls. But they did it.

Two Weeks Later

We took them out during the public holiday to catch Ice Age 3. Family and friends joined in to watch the movie. The movie was hilarious; the kids couldn’t help laughing out loud during the movie. Everyone had a good time.

Now, it’s back to the pool for more training.

17th Brunei Age Group Swimming Championships

The 17th Brunei Age Group Swimming Championship was held on the 3-5 July 2009 at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex swimming pool. The event was organised by the Brunei Amateur Swimming Association (PRAB) with the support and cooperation of the Department of Youth and Sports of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

The aim of the tournament is to promote the swimming interest in the country and also to build good camaraderie amongst the clubs that are competing, whilst allowing the talent scouters to find swimmers to represent the country in the future.

There were about 200 registered swimmers from eight clubs, namely Skim Latihan Renang (SLR), Royal Brunei Recreation Club (RBRC), Royal Brunei Polo Club (RBPC), Jerudong International School (JIS), Dolphin Swimming Club (DSC), Micia Swimming Team (MST), Brunei Swimming Club (BSC), and Miri Amateur Swimming Association (MASA) from Miri, Sarawak. Swimmers will compeete in approximately 132 events categorised into Age Groups - Group 1 (15-17 years), Group 2 (13-14 years), Group 3 (11-12 years), Group 4 (9-10 years) and Group 5 (8 years and under).

The Finish

Skim Latihan Renang (SLR) finished as champions with a total of 98 medals – 47 gold, 31 silver and 20 bronze medals. First runner-up went to the Miri Amateur Swimming Association (MASA) with 22 gold, 24 silver and 27 bronze medals. Royal Brunei Recreation Club (RBRC) was second runner-up with 11 gold, 11 silver and 5 bronze medals. The 4th to 8th placing went to MICIA Swimming Team, Dolphin Swimming Club, Brunei Swimming Club, Royal Brunei Polo and Jerudong International School respectively.

The best boy swimmers during the championships went to Md Bahrin Shah (Group 1), Choo Jing Yi (Group 2), Christian Nikles (Group 3), Lau Jasper (Group 4) and Luther Lee (Group 5).

The best girl swimmers were Maria Grace Koh (Group 1), Tiffany Liew (Group 2), NurhanaYossli (Group 3), Jocelyn Wong (Group 4) and Alissa Yong (Group 5).

Ten New National Records

Desmond Lee (SLR) broke his own national record in the 1500m Freestyle Men’s Open finishing the race in 18:56.71, which was previously set at 19:08.43.

Anderson Lim (SLR) set 3 new records at the meet. He swam the Group 2 (13-14) Boys 100m Butterfly in a time of 1:07.33 breaking his previous record of 1:08.62. Anderson also set a new Group 2 Boys 400m Individual Medley record of 5:34.53, breaking the 5:43.89 record set by Dzairenny Muslim in 2000. Anderson also now holds the Group 2 Boys 200m Butterfly record with a time of 2:30.49, previously held by Felix Lee at 2:35.19.

Muhd Isa Ahmad (RBRC) now holds the Boys 9-10 record in the 50m Free with a time of 32.61, which was previously held by Md Bahrin Shah at 33.81

Muhd Bakri Yossli (SLR) broke the 50m and 100m Backstroke Boys 9-10 record finishing in a time of 40.64 and 1:25.04 respectively.

Alissa Yong (SLR) set a new Group 5 (8&U) Girls record in the 50m Breaststroke with a time of 56.59.

In the Group 1 (15-17) Girls 400m Free, Felicia Lee (MST) broke Sarah Janin’s time of 5:33.64 set in 1994 with a new record time of 5:20.59. Felicia also set a new Group 1 Girls record for the 800m Free in a time of 11:11.25.

2nd KK Law Inter Club Age Group Swimming Championship, Miri

A total of 188 swimmers from seven teams took part in the 2nd KK Law Inter Club Age Group Swimming Championship at the Gymkhana Club Miri (GCM), which was held on the 20-21 June 2009. The two-day event was organized by GCM and sponsored by KK Law in hopes of promoting swimming, friendship, cooperation and goodwill among the clubs in the Borneo region.

The 1st KK Law Inter Club Swimming Championship was held on the 26-27 July 2008. And since then, the number of swimmers has increased considerably, which highlights each club’s dedication to promoting the sport and training up of potential swimmers to compete in friendly rivalry and uphold the spirit of sportsmanship.

This year, there were seven clubs registered. Three clubs from Brunei, namely MICIA Swimming Team (MST), Brunei Swimming Club (BSC), and Royal Brunei Recreation Club (RBRC). Representing Sabah, Kelab Renang Blue Marlin (BMSC) and Sutera Harbour Marina Golf Country Club (SHMGCC) flew in to compete. The Miri teams competing were Kelab Rekreasi Petroliam (KRP) and Kelab Gymkhana Miri (GCM).

BSC in Miri Swim

We wanted to give our young swimmers a taste of competition with new faces in a new environment, with aims to developing them and bettering their personal best times. Due to various reasons, our club went with a diminished team of 5 swimmers, as opposed to our initial entry of 16 swimmers. Md Aiman Hj Md Effendy, Andrew Mead, and Simon Mead will be swimming in the “Boys 8 & Under” events while Nathan Lim and Md Akmal Hj Md Effendy will be competing in the “Boys 9 – 10” category.

DAY ONE OF COMPETITION
The day started early with breakfast at 6.30am in the manager’s quarters before heading off to the pool. Prior to the warm-up, the team managed to take a group photo in the scorching sun, which lasted throughout the entire day. Our swimmers will go home with goggle and swimwear tan lines for souvenirs...

Nathan and Simon were in the first event of the day, the 100m Freestyle. Simon swam in the opening swim of competition and did well to control his nerves, with the help of “scissors, paper, stone”, thumb war and interesting characters to distract him.

There were a number of events before our next race. So there was time for play in the children’s pool.

Even had time to present a few medals to some of the winners.

While waiting for your next event in the marshal area, note to all swimmers with milk teeth, don’t play with a loose tooth less than six events prior to your swim…

Nevertheless, Akmal made the swim and finished the 50m Breaststroke with one less tooth and in good time despite some blood loss...

After some cool down in the children's pool, we all went back to the hotel for some lunch and rest.

In the afternoon, Simon was the only entry and, after a heartbreaking technical goggle difficulty during the Breaststroke start, he was psyching himself up to do well in the 50m Butterfly. He swam the event in fine form finishing under the 1-minute mark and coming in seventh overall.

By the end the day, the kids were left exhausted and looking forward to the next day of competition.

DAY TWO
The day began with the same routine but slightly earlier as requested during the manager’s meeting because the teams from KK teams had to catch a flight back. Today the weather was gloomy with some rain.

One of the day’s difficulty…getting a nice group photo together.

Aiman is the new addition to today’s competition having arrived yesterday afternoon with his parents. He was also in the first race of the day, the 50m Backstroke, with Andrew.

Wasn’t afraid to taunt the other swimmers…

…despite being one of the smallest swimmers…the diving block was almost taller than him.

Today, the kids were more relaxed...

...compared to Day 1

The 50m Freestyle – Our final event. We finished with good starts and, more importantly, all our swimmers recorded personal best times. Looking forward to more future meets and definitely better times (personal bests).

BSC Novice Swimming Gala

The Novice Swimming Gala is hosted annually by the Brunei Swimming Club as an in-house meet for the swimmers on our "Learn To Swim" program. Exclusive to swimmers enrolled with the Club, the Gala aims to introduce them to friendly competition in a fun and enjoyable way. The event usually runs from 3 pm till 6 pm and is followed by some light refreshment.

The Gala will offer swimmers a means of assessing themselves and keeping track of their progress. All participants will receive certificates that detail their individual events, times and placing within their age group.

The Club also uses this event to help prepare its swimmers for competitions in the future, within the region and beyond.

The meet also caters for beginners. Swimmers who have not fully developed their swim strokes can take part in water events designed to improve water confidence. The Swimming Gala is also used to get parents and supporters to become involved with their child's swimming.

The highlight of the Gala are the novel events that provide participants and spectators with fun and entertainment. Prizes can be won for certain events. In 2004, novel events included the treasure hunt, horsey, and ball dribbling. The Gala 2005 featured the treasure hunt and underwater hurdles.

BSC-100PLUS Inter-Club Swimming 2005

In 2005, Brunei Swimming Club in association with F&N Coca-Cola (Brunei) Sdn Bhd proudly presented the first BSC-100PLUS Inter-Club Swimming Championship. This championships is opened to all swimming clubs in Borneo. Swimming events will be swum in four age groups. The winning club will be decided by medal tally.

As part of BSC's annual community service project, this event is aimed at developing the competitive potential of the sport by providing upcoming swimmers with the opportunity to compete, and build a platform for selection in overseas competition. Also through this, BSC hopes to refresh local technical officialing skills in anticipation of hosting international swimming competitions at home. The event is supported by the Brunei Amateur Swimming Association and Department of Youth and Sports in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

The competition was held on Sunday, 1st May 2005, at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex Swimming Pool. The day commenced at 8.00 a.m. and finished at 6.30 p.m. There were five teams registered, namely Brunei Swimming Club, Dolphins Swimming Club, Hammerheads Swimming Club, Mabohai Club and Stingray Swimming Club.

After a competitive day, it was Stingray SC, managed by Bohrem and coached by Hj Yusof, that take away the champions trophy. The runners-up was Mabohai Club, who is coached by Victor. In third is Dolphins SC coached by Harjimmy.

Brunei Inter-School Swimming Championships

The Inter-School Championships is now a one and a half day competition usually held on a weekend. The venue is the Aquatic Centre in the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex. Launched in 2001, this championship organised by BSC and is conducted in coordination with the Youth and Sports Department in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, the Brunei Amateur Swimming Association, and the Department of Co-Curricular Activities and the Department of Schools in the Ministry of Education.

Students will compete in five age-groups for boys and girls as shown below, and the events usually include the 50 and 100 metres in all four disciplines and the ever-competitive 4 x 50 metre Freestyle Relay. This championships is also a viewpoint for national selectors to seek out swimmers with potential to compete and represent Brunei overseas.

Open to all schools in Brunei, this competition looks to service the local sports community by:
1. Encouraging young students to take up swimming as a survival skill,

5. Refreshing the technical skills of the officials,
6. Recruiting and training new technical swimming officials.

At BSC, we have instructors and coaches that add their own personal touch to teaching swimming. Currently, there are five instructors/coaches at the club, all of whom are qualified AUSTSWIM Teachers of Swimming and Water Safety.

With elective completions in AUSTSWIM Teacher of Towards Competitive Strokes, and AUSTSWIM Teacher of Infant Aquatics, BSC ensures that its coaches maintains a certain level of knowledge and professionalism.

Our Classes

BSC has a few different types of classes available.

Ladies and Mens classes are designed for adults that want to learn to swim in a supportive and comfortable environment. The class caters for all levels.
Bubble Blowers are designed for the younger kids, this class aims to instill water confidence, correct breathing technique and develop the basic techniques to propelling through the water.
Beginners are instructed the basics of kicking and arm coordination. Swimming is learned aided primarily with kickboards.
Intermediate classes is designed to improve technique of three main stroke - the freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke.
Squad is designed to improve efficiency and effectiveness in all strokes and to increase strength, stamina and endurance. Program is design specifically for competitive swimming.
Group classes (minimum of 5 people) can be organised with the club. Private classes are also available at a premium. Simply contact the club via phone, email, fax or dropping in to inquire during operating hours.
Baby & Me is a structured program carefully designed to develop safety, confidence and co-ordination in the water for babies and toddlers from 4 months of age.
- An early start encourages a lifetime of participation and enjoyment in and around water.
- Gives positive social experiences with peers of same age.
- Develpes mobility and co-ordination.

New Enrolments

If you are interested in swimming classes at Brunei Swimming Club, you simply need to complete the appropriate enrolment & consent forms and send it to us. Please note that all students below 16 years of age are classified as children. Also, BSC has classes called "Baby n Me" for infants and toddlers aged 4 months to 3 years.

Your enrolment application can be sent via:

Email. Download the document and complete the enrolment form in doc format. Note that any signatures required can be signed at the Club prior to a lesson. Then, email the completed form as an attachment to bruneiswim@gmail.com.
Fax. Print out a copy and complete the enrolment form. Then, simply fax the completed form to fax no. 02-333031.
In Person. Print out a copy and complete the enrolment form. Then, just drop it off at the Club, preferably during opening hours.

Brunei Swimming Club opened in 2000. Runned as a family business, BSC has been developing "Learn to Swim" Programs to cater for all ages and skill levels.

Acknowledging the importance for everyone to learn to swim and being able to survive in the water, BSC has teachers that have the experience and capabilities to teach swimming and water safety. At BSC, we know that every person is an individual and we understand the importance of progressing at your own pace whilst helping you break through those mental barriers.

BSC has been the official organisers of swimming events in Brunei. Annual events include the Brunei Inter-School Swimming Championships (since 2001) and the BSC-100PLUS Inter-Club Swimming Championships (2005).

Brunei Swimming Club organises these events under strict guidelines and adheres to FINA regulations. We hope to benefit Brunei's local community by:
1. Encouraging more people to take up swimming as a survival skill,
2. Promoting swimming as healthy lifestyle activity,
3. Providing an avenue for swimmers of all ages to meet,
4. Developing the competitiveness of swimming in Brunei,
5. Refreshing the technical skills of the officials,
6. Recruiting and training new technical swimming officials.

BSC has also supported and been involved in almost every other swimming event in Brunei, from the SEA Age Group to FOBISSEA. Also, we have successfully conducted swimming classes as extra and co-curricular activities (ECA/CCA) for schools.
