17th Brunei Age Group Swimming Championships



The 17th Brunei Age Group Swimming Championship was held on the 3-5 July 2009 at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex swimming pool. The event was organised by the Brunei Amateur Swimming Association (PRAB) with the support and cooperation of the Department of Youth and Sports of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

The aim of the tournament is to promote the swimming interest in the country and also to build good camaraderie amongst the clubs that are competing, whilst allowing the talent scouters to find swimmers to represent the country in the future.

There were about 200 registered swimmers from eight clubs, namely Skim Latihan Renang (SLR), Royal Brunei Recreation Club (RBRC), Royal Brunei Polo Club (RBPC), Jerudong International School (JIS), Dolphin Swimming Club (DSC), Micia Swimming Team (MST), Brunei Swimming Club (BSC), and Miri Amateur Swimming Association (MASA) from Miri, Sarawak. Swimmers will compeete in approximately 132 events categorised into Age Groups - Group 1 (15-17 years), Group 2 (13-14 years), Group 3 (11-12 years), Group 4 (9-10 years) and Group 5 (8 years and under).

The Finish

Skim Latihan Renang (SLR) finished as champions with a total of 98 medals – 47 gold, 31 silver and 20 bronze medals. First runner-up went to the Miri Amateur Swimming Association (MASA) with 22 gold, 24 silver and 27 bronze medals. Royal Brunei Recreation Club (RBRC) was second runner-up with 11 gold, 11 silver and 5 bronze medals. The 4th to 8th placing went to MICIA Swimming Team, Dolphin Swimming Club, Brunei Swimming Club, Royal Brunei Polo and Jerudong International School respectively.

The best boy swimmers during the championships went to Md Bahrin Shah (Group 1), Choo Jing Yi (Group 2), Christian Nikles (Group 3), Lau Jasper (Group 4) and Luther Lee (Group 5).


The best girl swimmers were Maria Grace Koh (Group 1), Tiffany Liew (Group 2), NurhanaYossli (Group 3), Jocelyn Wong (Group 4) and Alissa Yong (Group 5).


Ten New National Records

Desmond Lee (SLR) broke his own national record in the 1500m Freestyle Men’s Open finishing the race in 18:56.71, which was previously set at 19:08.43.


Anderson Lim (SLR) set 3 new records at the meet. He swam the Group 2 (13-14) Boys 100m Butterfly in a time of 1:07.33 breaking his previous record of 1:08.62. Anderson also set a new Group 2 Boys 400m Individual Medley record of 5:34.53, breaking the 5:43.89 record set by Dzairenny Muslim in 2000. Anderson also now holds the Group 2 Boys 200m Butterfly record with a time of 2:30.49, previously held by Felix Lee at 2:35.19.

Muhd Isa Ahmad (RBRC) now holds the Boys 9-10 record in the 50m Free with a time of 32.61, which was previously held by Md Bahrin Shah at 33.81

Muhd Bakri Yossli (SLR) broke the 50m and 100m Backstroke Boys 9-10 record finishing in a time of 40.64 and 1:25.04 respectively.


Alissa Yong (SLR) set a new Group 5 (8&U) Girls record in the 50m Breaststroke with a time of 56.59.

In the Group 1 (15-17) Girls 400m Free, Felicia Lee (MST) broke Sarah Janin’s time of 5:33.64 set in 1994 with a new record time of 5:20.59. Felicia also set a new Group 1 Girls record for the 800m Free in a time of 11:11.25.
